KIRBY STEPHEN AUCTION
APRIL 17th
Report by 'Benjamin'
"160 in the catalogue
with approx 40 late entries, some of whom did not stay when they realised how poor the trade was.
The horses and ponies in the sale had mostly wintered quite well
Some had travelled a considerable distance eg from N Ireland (they were in mart overnight) others from Shropshire
I watched about 60 through the ring with perhaps one in three being sold.
A number of very fit stallions in mart with mares in season in close proximity were a H&S issue both to themselves, their handlers and everyone with some having to be moved to different pens.  Dealers book Lot numbers only and pens are allocated-- with mart staff only finding on the day that dealer has brought a stallion
One very elderly childs first pony went through the ring after being ridden round the car park for ages--he looked a star--hope he found a good home--he was very long in the tooth and could not track up but was generous and kind to tiny jockey.
One very large 12yo jack donkey with French papers caused a lot of interest but was unsold at 250gns
A very well bred Sec A ride or drive sold for 190gns
An older reg Fell stallion sold at 150gns
A yearling mini colt and a yearling Sec A sold but did not cover the cost of microchipping and passport
There were approximately 20 tied to lorries in the yard all day in the sun, most had hay but I did not see water offered
A line of coloured yearlings in good body condition had a colt on one end which repeatedly mounted the filly tied next to it.
A fit coloured colt tied to one trailer bucked at everyone passing including vehicles trying to leave and constantly tried to break free.
Two of the yard horses gave cause for concern
One about 13hh had full set of baby teeth, somewhat worn down, was cow hocked, weak and skinny, fully shod and had tell tale scars around the mouth and withers suggesting it had been ridden or driven, it just could not stand still fidgetting about all the time.

The second a very depressed coloured cob had a very painful and badly infected eye hiding under a very heavy forelock--no-one seemed to know who owned it.
A number of farmers shook their heads in disgust but passed no comment.
If that was a cow I am fairly sure prosecution would follow
AHO was present but did not act on the yard horses as they were not entered in the sale.
No RSPCA or WHW"
