Brecon Horse Fair 16th March 2008

Brecon Horse Fair 16th March 2008

My first time to a horse fair, and it was not too bad, although the sellers were few and far between, there seemed
to be large amount of buyers.
Walking into the sales area I saw a girl about 16-ish with no saddle/ bridle and
no hat etc on an emaciated dark bay gelding of about 14.2hh.
It?s ribs were very obvious and hind quarters with lack of muscle, he was shod with one shoe hanging
off as she just sat trotting up and down showing off to the crowd
A coloured stallion was being ridden the same way (no tack) by another young girl but his condition
and weight were ok, he was barefoot and looked to have good feet.
We spotted a tiny coloured Shetland type colt,he couldn?t have been more than 10 months old.
He was  tied short to a trailer but the halter was ok and he could'nt get into trouble tied in the way he was.
He looked as though he had rubbed his chest on something but there was no cuts/ abrasions to
see, nor rug rubs, it could possibly have been lice.
His feet were very over grown, he looked pigeon toed, I think, due to the hoof being so overgrown.
His coat was scruffy but his weight was ok, lovely little boy, very sweet and not at all coltish while
we watch I was approached by the seller and told  ?you can have him for 150?, I said no thanks and had to
walk away, I nearly came home with him but alas, I have no where to put such a small pony colt.
I was quite disgusted by what followed. I saw a small pony, no more than 11hh, and just a
yearling as he clearly still had a foal tail, the pony had a harness on, he was very sweaty
and looked petrified, with huge blinkers on, and his tail knotted up.
He was thin. I overheard the seller, trying to sell the pony, saying what a good little driving
pony this was, just look at his legs! What legs?  he looked more like a British Riding Pony, poor little thing
A nice sight to see was 2 well fed and healthy looking horses, they were tacked up but tied with head
collars on top of their bridle's and a haynet full of hay each.
Probably the best sight of the day. There were others tied to lorries with no haynets but they all looked healthy.
A few litters of puppies were on sale, 2 cages in the back of a car with 3
sheepdogs crammed in each,  and a cage with 3 mixed breed pups shivering out in the open in front of another car.
Some rabbits looked well in clean hutches and bedding and lots of food.
