HUGE RISE IN ENQUIRIES FOR PLACES OF SAFETY
November 2009 - This charity is still reporting a continued steep rise in enquiries from members of the public regarding signing over horses and ponies due to economic pressures and redundancy. In the last month we have seen a50% increase in enquiries from owners needing homes for much loved horses and ponies as well as reports of abandoned equines being found around the UK. As we head towards Winter, the most expensive times of year for horse keepers, we expect tha things will only get worse and also expect a sharp rise in the number of equines going through auction rings and vended at horsefairs. Horses are vulnerable and no longer the playthings of the rich, often those on low income are able to buy horses and ponies for very little money - foals at auctions this month selling for less than £10 each - then realise that keeping them is very expensive. This is where things can start to go very wrong and animals suffer.
Charities are constantly bombarded with requests to help but often do not have places to offer or the funds to enable more mouths to be fed.
It is heartbreaking for owners to have to hand over their much loved horses or arrange destruction, some are elderly equines who have never lived anywhere else or with any other person than the distraught owners but in this climate it is without doubt the better options than vulnerable horses ending up bewildered and frightened in auction.
